Pad Mounted Transformer Shortage

Pad Mounted Transformer Shortage

Customers may not be aware that electric utility companies are facing unprecedented multi-year nationwide supply chain issues with a wide variety of electric distribution equipment. Among the items delayed are pad mounted transformers. Navarro has had unfilled purchase orders out on pad mounted transformers since June 2021. We have managed to find a few scattered around from various places but we still have more than 500 on order with no delivery date known at this time.

Recently quoted transformers have delivery dates of more than a year away and the cost has gone from around $2,200 per unit to as much as $ 5,500 for the average unit we use. In fact, suppliers will not quote a firm price at this time. The most recent ones we received were in the $4,500 range. However, we are accepting every one we can get, no matter the cost for now.

This shortage will have a huge impact on new construction. We will no longer be able to install pad mounted transformers for future construction but only for construction that has already commenced, or at least, already has a foundation completed. Temporary services, services to campers, barns, boat docks, etc. won’t be able to be connected until the shortage subsides and we get back to somewhat normal deliveries, unless the customer requests overhead service. At this time we have an adequate supply of poles and pole mounted transformers.

We apologize for having to convey such unfortunate news, but we need to have our customers fully aware of the situation, and will provide updates as more information becomes available. (For more information about the causes of the transformer shortage see the Infographic below "Trouble with Transformers")
